Lesson 6 Assignment

Creating Image Maps

I used MapEdit to create the client side image map for this week's assignment. I find it less confusing than MapThis! which has apparently been replaced by something called Live Image. I guess I'm stuck on what I know best plus I'm so far behind this week, I don't have time to learn another program.

You have to travel to view the image map I created for this week's assignment. Click on the small image below to go see the *real thing*. I realize that this image map is not well delineated but it suits the mood of the page I created to go with the map. I think you'll understand when you get there.

Here's another client side image map that I created some time ago that is well delineated.

The Subaru Website uses a client side image map on it's subpages as a menu. I'm sure there is a substantial file savings from having only one image as opposed to six separate buttons and also gives the image designer some latitude in creating a new image. I think this is an excellent use for an image map.

My server does not support server side image maps at the level I am currently subscribed to. However, I'm not a fan of server side maps due to the extra time lag and lack of knowing where you might be going (i.e...only coordinates show up on the status bar...not url's). In my opinon, server side maps are quickly becoming outdated by CS maps because of this. Most browsers now support CS maps and I would much rather include a text menu for those that don't. The Dogpatch uses a server side image map at the bottom of the page as a menu.

GIF Wizard is truly a great asset to the World Wide Web. Can PSP do this type of reduction? I'm sure it can if you understand how to optimize the palette...what colors to leave in and what colors aren't really necessary. But why would you go to that kind of trouble when GIF Wizard is available?
