I converted the original color image (22 KB) to a greyscale image and then reduced the depth to 16 colors using the error diffusion method. The resulting b/w image is 7.5 KB. I used the following HTML code to produce the overlay: <IMG LOWSRC="raftingsbw.gif" SRC="raftings.gif" WIDTH=179 HEIGHT=126> |
| I created this background to tie my Paint Shop Pro Assignments together. I used the following HTML code in all pages of this website:
<BODY BACKGROUND="seamlsbg12.jpg" BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF"> NOTE: #FFFFFF is the hexidecimal code for the color "WHITE" NOTES: The above headline graphic,"Backgrounds & Transparent GIF's" is a transparent GIF that lets the background show through. I created this with a white background which is the transparent color in this GIF. I added the magenta text with the text tool and while still selected, I chose IMAGE > SPECIAL EFFECTS > ADD DROP SHADOW > COLOR: Black > Opacity: 255 > Blur: 3 Horizontal/Vertical: 1. I decreased the color depth: COLOR > DECREASE COLOR DEPTH > 256 COLORS > OPTIMIZED: NEAREST COLOR and, with white selected as the background color, saved as a GIF with the OPTION: "Set the transparency value to the background color". |

| Notes: I resized the original seagull photo by half and made four copies from the resized original. I converted the copies to greyscale. Then, I produced the four b/w images above in different file formats (GIF and JPG) at various color depths. Quality vs. file size is compared above.
Problems: Unfortunately, I did all the conversions on the original large (420 x 280) seagull.jpg before resizing. When I resized, the dithering was very bad on all of the b/w images. I then went back and resized before performing the conversions. Conclusions:The quality of images is much better if you resize before converting. The best quality/file size combo is the 256 Greyscale JPG image although the 16 color Error Diffusion image isn't too bad if you need to save a few KB's. The 16 color nearest color image could easily be used in an overlay image. | |
